Upgrade old computers with new memory, microprocessors and drives. Or donate them to a computer refurbisher or recycler. Do not let them end up in a landfill where their toxic materials can pose environmental hazards.

Never throw a cell phone into the trash-see that it gets reused or recycled. Cell phones have a toxic waste stream including lead, mercury and cadmium. When discarded improperly, these toxins are released into the environment.

Open an account at a consignment shop for nice things you want to get rid of. There are shops for specific items, such as Cds, clothes or furniture, as well as stores that sell a wide range of merchandise. You'll make a commission if a store sells your items.
