Ceiling fans

Install ceiling fans to save money on cooling and heating and reduce energy waste. In the summer, use them in place of a central air conditioner. In the winter, a ceiling fan with a motor that runs in reverse can push warm air down from the ceiling and thus conserve energy.

Air conditioning filters

Check air conditioner filters; they should be cleaned or replaced monthly to help the unit run at peak efficiency. If you have an outdoor unit, make sure its coils are unobstructed by debris, plants or shrubs.

Heating efficiency

Take extra steps to maximize heating efficiency when the weather turns cold. Close shades and curtains to reduce heat loss as soon as the sun goes down. Open all the shades and curtains during the day, except those on north-facing windows, to take advantage of solar heat gain.
Close doors and vents to rooms that are not being used.
