We’ve incorporated the latest fluorescent technologies in our new store designs with up to a 50 percent lighting energy savings over stores with older designs. We are currently retrofitting existing stores with state-of-the-art metal halide* fixture components to improve lighting quality and generate up to 50 percent lighting energy reduction over the older technology lamps. Our Energy Management System (EMS) controls the store lighting and turns off non-essential lighting during unoccupied hours adding to the energy savings.
*Halide lamps produce a high light output for their size, making them a compact and powerful light source.
We are implementing Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology for freezer and cooler applications that can reduce energy usage by 50 to 80 percent over traditional incandescent lamps. Currently over 550 stores have LED lighting and motion sensors on the refrigerated door cases, saving nearly 100,000 kWh annually per store. Behind the scenes, we have 41,000 fixtures company- wide using LED technology to illuminate our walk-in coolers and freezers.
Our track lighting has been redesigned to use new high-efficiency lamps and gain up to a 70 percent energy savings, over older generation track fixtures. In our warehouse operations, we have also adjusted the timing on our bi-level lighting fixtures that illuminate the selecting aisles so the lights stay on only one minute after being triggered by the motion sensor.
